About Our Research

PCORI funds studies to determine which healthcare options work best for which patients, given their needs, circumstances, and preferences, so they and those who care for them can make better-informed health and healthcare decisions.

Most PCORI funding supports comparative clinical effectiveness research, or CER, which compares the benefits and harms of two or more healthcare options to answer specific research questions. We also fund studies to improve the methods for conducting CER, to be sure it produces valid, trustworthy, and patient-centered evidence that will improve health care and patient outcomes. And through PCORnet, our National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network initiative, we are enhancing the infrastructure needed to conduct research more efficiently, with greater power, and at lower cost.
